|
|
I'm new to linux I'm having a problem with locating suitable software for different things I need to do. So I was wondering if perhaps there was a list or something about basic apps for different purposes, something where one could look up say what cd burning programs there are. With such a list it would be so much easier to move from windows to linux since one could just pick programs from different categories, install them and move on. Now every time I want to do something new with my linux I first have to find the programs and that's I real pita (I'm worried that sometimes I might go for the second best for me since I didn't know the best excisted). |

There are loads of different categories in /usr/portage, eg app-office for office apps, media-sound for xmms et al, net-www for web browsers, app-cdr for cd burning apps... _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

I'll take that as a no. I've taken a look at the portage tree but there's just too much stuff in there for me (perhaps in time I can find the most useful apps from there). If I ever get the knowledge and the time I'll write a newbie list myself. |

That's actually one feature I would like in portage: that emerge -s would also search the description of a package, or maybe that we have a switch that searches only the description.
Or is there any such function already?
If not, I might file a bug report.
[EDIT]: Never mind, I found it in the man page... (Maybe I should have checked that before I posted, hmm?... )
emerge -s --searchdesc <what you're looking for> might help you.

Hmm, let's see. Some programs I often used in windows:
web browser (probably mozilla or opera)
irc client
something to burn cds with
a dvd program
a calendar
msn messenger client
a graphics program (I can't figure out what this is really in English)
office program (openoffice gogo?)
news reader
That's a few I could think of. There are some programs in kde that do some of those things but I think there are better programs also out there if I just knew what they were.
edit: Charming, konqueror just crashed when I posted this.
edit2: Oh, I almost forgot a mail program could come in handy too. I'm looking for something that can import my outlook express mails, kmail claims to do it for version 5, I should probably test if it works with 6 too. |

Thanks a lot. I'll try those probably tomorrow if I wake up early enough. I checked it out and kde has KOrganizer but I was hiding in my task bar or what ever it is.
edit: Ok, now this is really ******. Konqueror crashed again when posting to this thread. Perhaps it is cursed... or not. |

NiklasH,
What about emerge -S, instead of emerge -s _________________ Regards,

Yeah, I know...
When I read the man page, I wanted to delete my post, but I'll keep it as a reminder to me to RTFM (Read The Fscking Man page) |

Hi!
Not Gentoo-specific but nevertheless very helpful for 'M$-Leavers'...

I'll do that. I just want to thank all of you very much for helping me out on my noobish problem. Now I have no excuse to go back to using windows. |

Yes, but it's waaaay to slow, 'emerge esearch'! (which also has become very slow in updating its database... ) |

If you're coming from Windows, Evolution will look and feel very familiar to Outlook. It's a very nice, albeit fairly bulky, app. I don't like it b/c of its size and the resources required to run it. But it's a nice e-mail/calendar/contacts/to-do list type of application. _________________ http://dkap.info |

Slightly OT, but still related to Gentoo...
If you're running vcron, just add the following to your /etc/crontab file:
Code: | 0 3 * * * root /usr/sbin/eupdatedb > /dev/null 2>&1 |
and your database will be updated nightly while you sleep. If you use dcron or some other cron flavor, adjust to taste.
