The problem is the same with any 2.6x kernel I try. Whenever I start x using agpgart external in fglrxconfig, all that ever happens is my screen blanks like it's loading but stays blank and never loads. But if I go and disable external agpgart and have it use the internal agpgart, it loads x just fine, but of course has no 3d acceleration. The thing is, if I reboot and use 2.4.22 using external agpgart it loads x just fine and has agp accel working but my sound doesn't work in quake3 and ET while it does work in 2.6 (which is why I want to use 2.6) along with the forcedeth patch that lets me use my nforce ethernet. Yes, I have dri off in kernel as well as have tried compiling the agpgart and nvidia agp as both modules and built in but they both have the same problem. The thing I noticed though, is when I do dmesg|grep agp, kernel 2.4.22 shows agpgart as v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann while in 2.6 it's v0.100 (c) Dave Jones and in internal agpgart mode it shows sort of a combination of the 2 agp garts, something about v0.100(c) dave jones modeled off of v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann. I'm thinking the reason it works in 2.4.22 is because of the different agpgart versions?? but I don't know what to do and I'm going crazy trying to get this to work.
btw my system specs is
radeon9800pro
soltek nforce2 mb

The most reliable method of getting things working is usually to compile the kernel AGP support as modules, and use the external agpgart option in fglrxconfig. Make sure that agpgart, nvidia-agp, and fglrx are all loaded before you start X (modules.autoload is an easy way to do this). If the screen goes blank, try CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE etc and see if they have any effect. If you can't get back to a console normally, then reboot and before you try and start X again, make a copy of the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log and post it here, along with the output of dmesg. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra
