|
|
I was thinking about setting up a proxy server on my home network, but I am unsure if it will be of any value. I have 3-4 computers connected to a linux router via an ethernet switch on a broadband connection.
Can I expect any speed increase with things cached locally?
Can I control acces to internet via password or userid?
What other advantages might there be I am unaware of?

Do the computers access mostly the same data? If they don't I'm not sure you'll see much of an increase in speed.
Other possible advantages:
- Control what sites can be accessed (censorship)
- Get a log of where the ppl in your net have surfed
- Easier throttling of www sessions |

Different computers don't access same websites very often, so that wouldn't be much of and advantage. I have young children in the house so the censorship and log would be a big advantage.
Can I control access to the internet by allowing/disallowing access based on username or password?

I'm pretty sure you can but I haven't done that with squid. Maybe someone else can help? |

Yes you can do user authentication with Squid, mines currently authenticates against an LDAP directory. |
