What happens when your power supply doesn't have enough watts? I got a new motherboard and it reccomends a 350 watt power suppy, I have only a 300 watt one. Sometimes while using the computer (It's usually when reading the DVD drive, but not always) the computer will just restart. I'm wondering if it's from not having an adequate power supply.
I have 2 IDE hard drives, a DVD drive, an AGP graphics card, and an Ethernet card in there (if that matters when figuring out if I'm not having enough watts).
Thanks for any help! |

You could be wondering correctly.

Take the extra IDE and DVD off and see if it'd last longer. Make sure it's not overheating, could be something else. |

well, I've let a CPU burn in program run for 3 hours, no problem. Played computer games for several hours no problem as well. Ran a memory tester program, everything worked 100%. So that's why I think it's power supply. Most of the time it reboots it's either using the DVD drive, or it's rebooting while booting up after it's rebooted from using the dvd drive. |

You can estimate the total wattage see if you hit the limit. With:

Your memory test and CPU burn doesn't draw much power, but you ruled out the heat problem. I had similar problem once, found out there was a hairline crack on the mobo and as temperature rise..
Yes, I agree with you on your original guess. Before changing power supply, try with diff dvd? But I think it's time to heed the recommendation? |
