I'm having a weird problem. I'm trying to install xfree right now.

It downloads fine and all the files pass the MD5 checksum test, but when
it gets to uncompressing xfree-4.3.0-r3 it failes with the following message

gzip : stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: error exit delayed from previous errors

!!! ERROR: x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r3 failed
!!! function unpack, line 296, exitcode 2
!!! failure unpacking X430srv-3.tgz

I have emptied /var/tmp/portage to make sure it had to download the files anew
I have also done emerge sync

I do the following when trying to install it

Code:

emerge sync
emerge -f xfree
emerge xfree

I do the -f so I use all the bandwidth at once and can download other stuff without having to worry about slowing the xfree installation.

I have also tried not doing the -f and let it download packadges as it needs them, same result.

I'm running this inside a vmware on a P3 700Mhz with 512Mgs of ram
The machine as 128Mgs of dedicated ram.

Anyone got an idea?

I think the propblem lies in corrupted tar files downloaded. Try to delete the file from /usr/portage/distfiles and rer-un the emerge. This should download a new version of the file. If you get the same problem, try to set the following entry in the /etc/make.conf file:

Code:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/"

This will take the files from the URL listed. I have never had problems with files from this mirror.

thanks. Guess I got where the files are stored wrong.
What's weird is that they pass the md5 test. you would think if they were corrupted, the sum wouldn't be the same.

will see how this works out.

well, tried both and still the same problem.
The MD5 checksum is good, so I am wondering if it's not the file on the mirrors that's somehow bad. Either that or my system is screwed up ....
