Hello, I'd like to make a CRPG - not sure of the specifics yet.
Are there any good RPG engines you guys could recommend?
I'm not sure what style I'm shooting for...
Anything open source game engines like Neverwinter Nights, Baldurs Gate, or Chrono Trigger? |

Neverwinter Nights is pretty nice, if you're trying to make a game that largely fits within that similar genre...bear in mind though, if you're planning on selling said game, you'd have to get a license from Bioware/Atari for that ^_^ Otherwise, you can just distribute it as a module, or if you had a more persistent RPG in mind, people even use the NWN engine to run persistent-world online RPG's, like a less-populated version of Everquest, in a sense...=) |

he asked for open source Only thing that comes to mind is the adonthell engine.
Or you could take a 3D MMORPG engine like Planeshift |

Hey I'd like to help you with this. I consider myself an "okay" programmer, and since I've moved from Windows to Linux I haven't really programmed anything useful under linux. So this would be a start. Could I help you with this rpg Reality Mage. The adonthell engine looks quite interesting. _________________ I myself can't beat you, but my creations can... |

The WorldForge is a nice project too. Very ambitious and still in development, though. |

Actually, I've thought about making an RPG myself. Don't know how legal it would be though. See, I'm a mild star wars fan (at least the star wars games), and I would really like to play SW Galaxies, but 15 dollars/month is way too much. I mean, I pay that much for my cable tv! I'm a student so I really can't afford that much. What I was thinking was taking the planeshift engine, forking it, and making a star wars-themed MMORPG, kinda like SWG. But I can't even begin to imagine if it's illegal (to use jedi, the name star wars, the planet names, race names, etc)... It would be fun tho! Also, if it became popular (and since we're talking star wars, it probably would be) it'd be a nice smack in the butt for SONY
I just think there's already one too many "fantasy"-style MMORPG's out there. |

As long as you do not try to sell it, it would be perfectly legal, just as any other fan-made game or story. _________________ aiya, tau tong ah! |

I guess when Planeshift: Crystal Blue comes out, I'll start tinkering with it |

Sure about that? I'm pretty sure distributing something for free does not make trademarks void. Mods have been foxed before. Wether or not someone will complain about it is another issue. |

For those of you talking about using the "Planeshift Engine", I believe Planeshift is just built on top of an engine called Crystal Space. |
