|
|
I am a complete newbie trying to make a jump into linux.
I am trying to install gentoo from stage 3 using GRP.
This is my second attemp at installing, the first didn't seem to work.
Anyway, at the "Setting Gento Optimization" step, it says to set USE flags (but leave the CHOST, CFLAGS, AND CXXFLAGS alone if using GRP)
So, What USE flags should I add, or should I just leave it alone altogether?
Are there any default recommendation?
Thanks
A complete Newbie. |

I haven't done a GRP install, but I do know that it uses binary packages, so I believe that you are safe leaving them alone for the install. However, after you are finished installing, you are probably going to run an update on your system to grab all the lastest packages ...
... will tell you what needs to be updated. And ...
... will update it.
Before doing that, you may what to look at modifing your USE flags. What you change them to is up to you.
... will install a great little util ('ufed') that you can use to easily update USE flags. It also provides a description of what each flag is for. However, CFLAGS and others will have to be manually updated in /etc/make.conf. There is some good info here and elsewhere on the web talking about what they should be.

You can also read it offline:
Code: | less /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc |
ufed uses this file too. |

Thanks for the links, I did actually see a couple of references before posting but wasn't sure what I should actually use for the flags.
I'll be reading up a bit more over the weekend and try to understand it a bit more.
I'm sure this will not be my last post relating to this thread.
thanks again
