I've got DRM working with Xfree 4.3.0-r3, KDE 3.1.4, using vannilla-sources-2.4.23/24 with either xfree-drm or kernel-drm.

Running from startx or kdm, everything is fine. However, if I exit the KDE session, the system locks up when running from kdm.

If I comment out the dri module from XF86Config then the lockups go away (unfortunately so does drm  )

This is all on a Toshiba Satellite 1900-305, radeon Mobility M6 LY

Try viewing the logs for either KDM, I believe it can be found in /var/log/kdm.log or the logs for Xfree, usually in /var/log/XFree86.0.log

See if there's anything juicy in there...

Nothing jumps out at me - - I've just tried a BIOS upgrade as well - nogo.

I'm sure I've seen other reports of similar things so maybe it's a problem with X 4.3.0?

I have the same problem with
Kernels: 2.6.0-gentoo and 2.6.1-gentoo
XFree: 4.3.0-r3
ATI Radeon M7

With 2.6.0-test11 kdm would not even startup, remerging xfree without the Mesa patch solved that, but it would still hang on shutdown.

I don't know if it'll help, but I had the same problem, my solution is in this thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=123088&highlight=kde+freeze
I'm not sure if it will help, because in my case it's not related to DRM

Nope xdm isn't the problem. It only occurs for me if I load the dri module in X and use KDE. Doing a startx with dri enabled causes no crashes.

Upgrading to xfree-4.3.0-r4 fixes it. There was a bug in radeon_dri.c
