kernel suddenly freezes my linux, nothing happens, monitor is as if it's presenting a picture or screenshot of screen.
no mouse movement, no key on keyboard works, no hdd activity.

the power led still stays on, and just so that the virus can tell me it's a virus and not a bug, my three little leds on the keyboard (numlock, scroll lock and caps lock) start blinking !!

My only action is to press the reset button, when it loads up there doesn't seem to be any problem.
and /var/log/everything/current doesn't show anything.

So, how can I log stuff, and find the root cause of problem ?
What's the best logger ?

Shane

that isnt a virus, thats a kernel crash. The keyboard leds start blinking when the kernel is in serious need of recusitation. What kernel are you running?

YES, it's correct, it's a virus.

while working, on my nice fluxbox, the virus suddenly freezes my linux, nothing happens, monitor is as if it's presenting a picture or screenshot of screen.
no mouse movement, no key on keyboard works, no hdd activity.

That doesn't sound like a virus. Sounds like your kernel died on you haha.

Try upgrading and/or reconfiguring/recompiling your kernel. I like the 2.6-mm series :D

Obviously you have no idea what is or is not a virus.

<sheesh!>

Code:
uname -a
Linux staherian 2.4.22-gentoo-r1 #3 Wed Dec 10 01:29:55 GMT 2003 i686 AMD Athlon(TM)Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

suprised, i haven't updated my kernel in ages.
just the normal emerge sync and emerge -UD world which updates packages.
why would kernel suddenyl act strange without being updated in ages ??
I thought emerge only fetches new kernel sources if available, but not compile them , install them and make bzImage, does it do that ???

I'll recompile the kernel again, but still should it not be logged somewhere ??

you need to manually compile each kernel you want installed and change the /usr/src/linux symlink

that's what I thought and said.
But could a kernel become unstable, or buggy through package updates ?
I think not ...
I'm only experiencing this problem in past 3 days, and have had this kernel for atleast a month !
Strange, but guess it's a push to go for kernel 2.6 :)

Sine you're new ("Joined: 12 Dec 2003"), I should probably mention that some people in here may find such comments a bit offensive (offensive to their intelligence I suppose).
I don't, and just to make it crystal clear for you I was joking with regards to the virus. But being who I am, I also treat your comment as a joke :)

What you're seeing is probably an indication that a Machine Check Exception has occurred. If nothing appears in your logs to confirm this, check all virtual consoles, there should be an exception printing somewhere.

For more information, search google for:

Quote:
"Machine Check Exception" linux

There is also at least one document on Intel's site that gives quite a bit of detail on MCE.

For one, that's not a virus. Two: "Need to catch a virus"? What?

ouch, either my cpu has past its life-time or linux-2.6.1-rc2-gentoo is pretty unstable or most likely i'm in deep trouble.
I installed linux-2.6.1-rc2-gentoo kernel, didn't have much problem booting up and emerging nvidia-kernel, and so on.

But it all started when I did "emerge alsa-utils",
after some unpacking, it came back with "Illegal Instruction",
I tried it again, and kernel crashed with message "Segment Fault" or something similar.
Rebooted, dcided not to emerge alsa stuff, started opening mozilla, evolution and normal applicaions, and wierd error messages were all over the place, evolution crashed my kernel this time.
Errors seem to refer to illegal instruction, Segmentation Fault and various of this kind.

Would anyone be kind enough to comment on my kernel config.
Though I don't think much can go wrong with it, apart from two:
1. I have alsa built-in, should try it as modue tomorrow
2. I do have insanely optimised CFLAGS, could be the root of all problems. does anyone else think so as well ??

What you're seeing is probably an indication that a Machine Check Exception has occurred. If nothing appears in your logs to confirm this, check all virtual consoles, there should be an exception printing somewhere.

I can't check virtual consoles when system comes to a freeze state, but i'm sure something does get printed somewhere.
That's why I asked if there's anyway to log such outputs.
Thanks for the info though, have to admit I didn't know blinking leds could be cause of Machine Check Exception.

Ah, silly me, I wasn't thinking. The exception should probably show up in the log that catches kernel messages. If the system is freezing up immediately after the exception, you may be able to get something with the Magic keys, documented in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysrq.txt.

yeh, Magic keys are probably the way to go..

Code:
gcc: Internal error: Segmentation fault (program cc1)
Please submit a full bug report.
See <URL:http://bugs.gentoo.org/> for instructions.
make[1]: *** [net/sysctl_net.o] Error 1
make: *** [net] Error 2

I see kernel 2.6 make command, acts very silently.
But error messages are alarming !

And the problem is solved.
NO more crashes what so ever.
How ? read-on.

lads, one piece of advise.
if you have a kernel for long, and has been stable for this period.
If you had numerous, regular crashes in space of 2 days.
do NOT recompile, reconfigure, re-emerge, re-install, re-blah the kernel or the machine.
I advise looking under the hood.
I did actually, but didn't see anything strange.
This morning, serveral crashes, nasty crashes.
and then when it restarted - it said "Physical Memory = 394MB".
It was supposed to 512MB !!
one side of one of my RAM slots in MB is grayed (burnt) !
thankfully, I had a spare slot and the RAM chips are fine.
One more good reason to invest on expensive RAM chips :)

Wondering though, how could I have possibly known, or prevented that ?
cos I did have my eye on MB temp these lately, and the cpu temp and they were both fine.
