Hi all,

I have 2 cardbus cards for my laptop, a xircom multifunction card and a 3com wireless 802.11g card (prism).

My question is whether I can simply remove alle PCMCIA related stuf from my notebook and work with hotplug exclusively? I understand hotplug is the subsyustem to use for cardbus cards. Is this true?

A related question is that I can't find a hotplug howto or a general introduction to this susbsystem on the Net. Could you provide some links to usefull docs?

Thanx!!!

From what i understand of PCMCIA and Hotplug: I think you need either PCMCIA support Added into your Kernel, or use an application like PCMCIA-CS. (although, from what i hear, PCMCIA-CS is on its way out in the newer versions of the Kernel). It sounds like your cards are pretty generic, and will work with the drivers in the kernel, so i'm sure you can get away without using the PCMCIA-CS drivers. but i still think you need PCMCIA enabled in your kernel..

hope that helps a little bit, but that's the (limited) extent to my knowledge on this stuff.

Hotplug treats cardbus cards as PCI devices. For example when your prism card uses the prism54 driver, compile this driver as module, then make an executable bash script called prism54 and place it into /etc/hotplug/pci/

In this script place all commands you would do to set up the device, for example /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start, ifconfig, iwconfig....
