Hi,

Having a laptop I want to keep the disk spun down as long as possible when I'm not accessing it. But the logging daemon seems to want to write to it every couple of minutes.

Can someone please tell me if there are any logging utils which will stop this from being happening. Maybe buffer all this information and then write to the HDD every half hour or so instead?

Also, any other handy tips on how to minimise disk access by other programs would be great.

Ta!

I once heard about laptop-mode, I think redhat/fedora has this by default. Unfortunately I don't have a link at hand atm.

UPDATE: Just in case you don't know, that's a kernel patch.

UPDATE: Just found a post on kerneltrap: http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/653

UPDATE: It turns out that laptop-mode is integrated into mainstream 2.6.

UPDATE: Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/laptop-mode.txt for more info.

metalog can be configured to buffer logs and then write it to the disk, you'll need to have a look at the man page thou
