Hello

I already made my firts experiences with etc-update resulting in a damged system. After emerging the baselayout again, my system was ok.

Now emerge says 63 files need update and I feel that I should do so. Nevertheless I'm not keen on screwing up everything again.

So what is the best alternative to etc-update? I've seen a few tools but I'm unsure which one to choose. I would prefer a graphical if there's a good one.

Thx

I had problems with etc-update in the past. Your best bet is to (if you choose to continue using etc-update) is to look at all the files that it shows need to be updated. Look at it carefully. What files have you personally edited?

If you see any files in the list that you have edited (/etc/fstab) then don't do -3 ! They are set up like this:
Code:

1)/etc/blah
2)/etc/blahblah
3)/etc/whatever

And so on....if you type the number of the file, like typing 1, you will be at a new prompt to edit only /etc/blah. From there, you can interactively merge it, choose to keep the old file, or completely replace it with the update. Thats the best way I've found to handle etc-update. I don't fear it anymore :)
