Hi, All:
I have a Sony vaio srx-55c laptop. I think most of the hardwares are the same with Srx-51/77/99, except that it has no
wireless stuff.
I think that to use linux is no more than 'configure' for a desktop user like me. And I almost gave it up before I read a note here on how to install gentoo on a vaio (the firewire CDRW/DVD cannot be automatically recognized). And I strugled to figure out the configurations for kernel (2.4.20). The goal is to bring up all my hardwares:
sound card: i8x0 ***
ethernet: e100 (no problem with it)
ieee1394: disk and DVD/CDRW ***
usb: Mass storage and Mouse ***
i810 graphic card: I think its ok.
Although I can use my DVD/cDRW, my touchpad mouse, and ethernet now, I'm still meeting problems, and need some help.
1) firewire hard disk....
I have chosen "scsi hard disk support", but I dont know how to use it.
(For cdrom, the said note:
echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 0 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
then the /dev/cdrom could work)
btw: I have four patitions on the disk.
2) usb mouse ...
"Logitech" USB mouse.
I used dmesg. It shows that the kernel has recognized it!!! But I cannot find in /dev anything related to it...
USB disk:
In windowsxp, it is recognized as "mass storage &#@", and appears in "My computer" as a hard disk.
I don't know how to use it in Linux. (It is not the Memory disk)
3) sound card: If I want to use ALSA, should I compile sound card support as a module, or can I built it in?
I just need tips.
Moreover, I'm now willing to try 2.6.0. plz give me some advice for both 2.4.20 and 2.6.0. Thanks.
Regards.

Ha! I come again with my Kernel-2.6.0 configuration. I figured out the switches to turn on all of my hardwares. Anybody who has a VAIO-SRX** may have a look at it. I hope it helps. [Except the wireless lan card...]
Hardwares:
1) P III 850 M SpeedStep
##256M
##30G
2) Intel 810 audio (i8X0)
3) Intel 810 Ethernet Card (e100)
4) Intel 810 Agp card
5) Touchpad PS/2 Mouse
6) Logitech USB Mouse
7) IEEE 1394 Firewire, with an external DVD/CDRW, and an external hardDisk
USB flashdisk
Here I only list the changes I've made when 'menuconfig':
1)
Processor Type:
-> P4... changed into PIII/Celeron
-> [*] Generic x86 support
-> [ ] Systematic multiprocessing support
2)
Power Management:
-> ACPI: I'm happy to find that all I need to choose have been automatically chosen.
-> CPU Frequency:
-> [*] CPU Frequency Scaling
-> [*] Intel SpeedStep on ICH_M: I don't know if it works, but I think so.
3)
Bus Options:
-> [ ] ISA Support
I unseleted this, because I think it's unnecessary. If you have different opinion on this point, plz let me know.
4)
Device Drivers-> Paralell Support:
-> [ ] Paralell Port Support
5)
Device Drivers-> Block Device:
-> [ ] Support for Large Block Device..
6)
Device Drivers-> SCSI:
-> [M] Scsi Disk
-> [M] Scsi CDROM
7)Device Drivers-> IEEE1394
-> <*> IEEE1394 Support
-> <*> OCHI 1394 Support
-> <M> SBP2
-> <M> Ethernet 1394: Maybe you don't need. Maybe I don't need, either...
-> <M> Raw Ieee1394: Same as above...
Device Drivers-> Networking
-> Ethernet 100M -> [*] e100
I found that eepro100 works too, but e100 seems to be better[No sleep error]
9) Device Drivers-> Character Devices:
-> Mice -> [M] Busmouse Support
: I don't think Logitech Mouse need this. Coz I use hid fine. Next time I'll unselect it to test.
-> [*] Sony VAIO...
-> DRI -> [M] I810...
10) Device Drivers-> Sound: I think everything automatically set is alright.
11) Device Drivers-> USB:
-> < > EHCI: Don't need. coz it's for 2.0 Usb
-> <*> OHCI
-> <*> UHCI
I don't know the difference of OCHI and UHCI, so I select both.
-> [M] Mass Storage Support.
-> [M] HID
-> <*> HID Input Layer Support
12) File System:
-> Psudo Filesystem... -> <*> Devfs
-> <*> CDROM/DVD -> [*] Transparent.....
-> Native Language
-> [*] CP936: Coz I'm Chinese
-> [*] UTF-8: I guess it's important...
13) Kernel Hacking:
-> < > Frame Pointer... : I don't think it is necessary.
So much. I think it's at least good for me.
I brought up Logitech Mouse as:
#modprobe hid.
and it appears at: /dev/input/mice
SCSI cdrom:
#modprobe sbp2
then at /dev/cdrom
SCSI disk:
#modprobe: ...God I forgot. you can find it uself. check /lib/modules...
USB Flash:
#modprobe usb_storage
then at /dev/sd*: look yourself.
Ethernet good.
Sound Detected. I haven't checked yet. ALSA....
AGP Card.... i810, I don't know if it is correct. Use Xfree-drm may be, but not now.
I'm looking forward to Gentoo 2004....
Have a nice day.
Regards.

Wow good job! I think maybe you don't need the generic x86 support though. |

Generic x86 is for generic style kernels you'd see cming out of mandrake or redhat, I don't think it hurt anything it just adds some possibly worthless compatiblity to your kernel |
