I get this every time I rsync nowadays?
If I try again after that it'll quit telling me the timestamp is the same as on the server...
Code:
wrote 164 bytes  read 1679813 bytes  65881.45 bytes/sec
total size is 56198996  speedup is 33.45
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1045)
>>> retry ...

>>> Starting retry 3 of 3

looks like a problem with the rsync mirror. do you get that with other mirrors, too?
Code:

mirrorselect -r -i

I'm getting the same thing with the UK mirrors and US mirrors. Has something broke within portage or rsync?
Or is there an update we have missed?

same thing here ...
I did emerge-webrsync, which temporarily did the trick of updating portage tree, but can use rsync or sync anymore
I use rsync version 2.6.0 protocol version 27

These are exactly my symptoms too with various mirrors (all that I try).

I did an emerge sync yesterday and an emerge world which updated slocate to 2.7-r2, and autoconf to 2.58.

Following 'emerge sync' output is typical:
Code:

receiving file list ...
link_stat "metadata/timestamp.chk" (in gentoo-portage) failed: No such file or directory
0 files to consider
client: nothing to do: perhaps you need to specify some filenames or the --recursive option?

I had the same problem as you, but found a solution.
I juste did an:

emerge-webrsync

and then I updated portage with the following:

emerge sys-apps/portage-2.0.50_pre14

I was then able to make emerge rsync work.

Code:

>>> starting rsync with rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...

My guess is that someone accidentally removed the /metadata/timestamp.chk file from the master rsync server, and this had been reflected in the mirrors. By the looks of things, emerge checks against this file to see if it should rsync portage, simply skipping if the timestamp is the same. With no file, rsync would fail.

This problem:

Code:

client: nothing to do: perhaps you need to specify some filenames or the --recursive option?
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(653)

only started happening when I upgraded from portage-2.0.49-r21to portage-2.0.50_pre15. I think there's a bug coz I was using the same rsync servers.

Also check out the other thread in this section.

Just to recap here - I've got an internal rsync mirror on my house network, to keep the three gentoo boxes here in sync. All three boxes are running the recent stable updates to portage and rsync. I'm still able to emerge fine, however my mirror still has that file. If I move it, I get the same error that I get if I try emerge sync against an official mirror

It's a problem with the rsync mirrors. Will be fixed (hopefully) soon. See www.gentoo.org
