Greetings!
I have installed the Gentoo distribution at home for the first time, with the luxuries of:
a spare server for testing
a week's worth of time
(actually a couple weeks; I am playing with it quite a bit before replacing my RedHat 8 Samba box)
I had a couple glitches (typos, LVM and 2.6 kernel combo), but most all were solved by either a quick forum search, or the LVM Howto.
The tone of the forums is quite civil, and the quality of the Gentoo documentation is very good - superior IMHO to most distributions I have seen. I am quite impressed, and wanted to drop this note onto your boards to let you know it
Now that I have a working 2.6.1 kernel with LVM running, the next step is to see if I can get that running on software RAID5 + spare. Should be interesting (and I am happy to hear from anyone who's done this before).

excellent, you will learn more in the next 2 months than you ever will with any other distribution
for the raid setup, have a look at the software raid howto on www.tldp.org. Theres also a guide in the docs forum _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

Glad to hear you are liking Gentoo and these forums. (Yes, they are civil, so long as you stay away from Off The Wall .)
If you are going to start with 2.6.1 and stay there, you should set the nptl use flag, if you haven't already, and upgrade to 1.4.2 Java (if you dare).
Have fun (you will)! _________________ -IHYOS
