Ok, I tried to install gentoo, for use as a firewall on an old cyrix box, but I think it was broken, because under debian I got kernel panics when I tried to compile a new kernel, and, unless I do a stage 1 (which fills up my very small /var on my very small hard disk) I get kernel panics when I emerge anything. So I switched to another box I had lying around, and I boot with the live cd, but have no networking.

It has 3 network cards, the same ones that were in the cryrix box, and is on the end of the same piece of cat5. The rest of the network works fine. "/etc/init.d/net.eth0" gives
"Bringing up networking...
failed"

Or something very similar, (I'm not sure, as I'm at work now).

"net-setup" gives no errors
neither does "dhcpcd eth0"

ifconifg only shows me lo, but ifconfig -a shows all 3 amoungst all the other things, so it knows they're there. I took all but one network card out, but that still didn't work. I'm somewhat lost.

Thanks for anyhelp...

First off, what LiveCD are you using?

Second, sometimes the modules required for normal operation aren't loaded on startup on the various LiveCDs I use (Alright, I only use the Gentoo experimental LiveCD w/KDE & GNOME) and I have to load them up myself, but everything works fine after that. A minor problem, though, that I've encountered is sometimes I have to initialize my internet-connected network interface last, after any others, or my internet doesn't work.

Thanks for the quick reply...

I'm not sure what live cd it is off hand (at work...), it's a few months old though, from maybe August, but I just had it lying around so I used it.

The thing is though, everything worked fine on the cyrix box. So I don't see why it wouldn't load everything correctly in this case. Only one of the network cards is currently in use.
