|

Hi,
I'm having a problem with Updating Portage during installation, right after I've chrooted in my new environment. The first time I tried 'emerge sync' , I couldn't connect to rsync.gentoo.org because the PC couldn't resolve the hostname. I tried resolving from another computer, using 'dig', and it appears that rsync.gentoo.org doesn't exist. Maybe this is just temporarily.
Anyway, I then added the following line to /etc/make.conf :
SYNC="rsync://rsync1.be.gentoo.org"
So now emerge should use this rsync mirror. Again, I launched 'emerge sync' and yes I was able to contact the server, but after a second I got the following error :
@ERROR: Unknown module '*'
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (405 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(165)
I tried a number of other mirrors, but always with the same result. Quite frustrating. Anyone know a solution or workaround ?
Thanx in advance,
Steven[/i] |

Perhaps this is related to the news of the rsync master server having problems? Find news at http://www.gentoo.org front page. |

Yeah. I'm having problems updating my portage tree too. I'd give it an hour or so until they get things sorted out... _________________ if at first you dont succeed, Skydiving is not for you.

Hmm, that explains a lot. Thanks for the tip. I found a workaround by the way, I just downloaded the latest portage snapshot from a gentoo mirror site. Now I'm bootstrapping.
Cheers,

I'm glad I read this post. I was trying to emerge sync for like 1/2 an hour -- thought my comp was the problem. Even did an emerge-webrsync and started a regular sync again...then started scratching my head. Thanks for the heads up. |

I cannot update my portage either...I am doing 'emerge-webrsync' now, is this all I have to do, or do I have to 'emerge sync' later on ? |

Ya you will have to do an emerge sync later on, but you can just wait (i.e. you do not need to do an emerge-webrsync) until the master portage tree server is back online. |
