I am trying to install from a Stage3 tarball for AthlonXP. I am doing so via a Knoppix bootable CD, and downloading the tarball.

I am at the point of emerge system, however, when I do this, I get the following error:
!!!No Profile Directory; System Mode Unavailable

This has me stumped. I have been following the instructions closely (or at least I thought I was).

I have entered the gentoo environment as instructed, and I am logged in as root, but, it doesn't seem to want to run emerge system.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is relevant but on the www.gentoo.org frontpage there is a notice about the rsync server being down. You may just have to wait until that is cleared up (keep checking the page for updates).

I noticed that, but... would it affect 'emerge system'?
If that was the issue, I was expecting a problem that would be more like the rsync error, not a problem with the profile.

But...I am a nOOb...

whoa whoa whoa...

Stage 3 doesnt require an emerge system, does it???

From what I'm seeing, you should go straight from chrooting to kernel compilation.

yes I did env-update and I did source /etc/profile
I did the three commands as listed in the handbook

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile

It took me to a prompt that started out: Knoppix /root>
whoami tells me that I am root

I then did emerge sync
That of course did not work because of the problem posted on Gentoo's front page.
So, following that, I (as I was suggested to do by emerge) ran emerge-webrsync
then I tried emerge system
and got the error I listed above

I then thought that I didn't need emerge system (as swgeckoman mentioned), and tried emerge --usepkg gentoo-sources
that gave the same error, so I tried emerge --usepkg vanilla-sources
same error again.

I hope that helps with any suggestions you may have.

I just got the same error here.
As of now the sync error seems to be gone.
I did an emerge sync, and afterwards did the emerge -p system.
Then everything ran fine...

I have had this problem before at other installations, and the emerge sync has always helped me out.

Hope it works your way to.
