|
|
I've looked and looked, but all the links I have found are dead. Anybody know?
I'm currently a masters student at an art college, and am trying to make the case that for alot of what goes on here, linux makes a lot of sense. Something like a demo CD that i could give out for folks to try would go a long way in making my case.
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appriecated. _________________ --

gentoo livecd's are mainly for installation or
maintenance.
if you want to show people what linux can do,
without installing linux, you might want to con-
sider downloading knoppix.
this is a distribution which is known for running
from cd, without installation, and without making
any changes to a system.
i believe it only has kde, but if you'd want to
show gnome, try gnoppix
good luck |

Yes, knoppix is great for that purpose. The only problem is, that Knoppix (ans gnoppix as well) is only available for the x86 architecture.
I have an iBook here and I want to test the abilitys of gentoo on my iBook without having to repartition my Mac OS X.
So it would be great having something like knoppix on ppc.

Oh, I guess you can use the liveCD easy ...
but don't expect a perfect setup, but for a presentation to get people hungry....
http://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/mirrors/gentoo/releases/ppc/1.4/livecd/livecd-ppc-1.4.iso
But you have to make shure to setup Xfree correctly, i.e with Xeasyconfig and starting a GUI, like KDE.
try xeasyconf,
edit your /etc/rc.conf
and add
DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm
XSESSION=kde
or just
export DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm
export XSESSION=kde
at the shell prompt and the type
startx,
then a KDE should come up....
hopefully nothing forgotten and not taken a roundabout instead a shorter way

Thanks for all your help.
I'll give the knoppix CD a try, as that is the easiest for others to try.
For the record, I'd like to go on record by stating that so far gentoo has taught more about linux than any other distro I have tried to date. The excellent docs and the abilty to easily configure things how I want them has me sold.
Now if I can just get alsa to work right.
