Hi all,

I've just installed gentoo and in the doc is said to type genkernel to start the compiling process... then the following thing is mentioned :

Code:
If you're using genkernel 1.2 (included in the 1.4-20030803 x86/i686 GRP set), use the following:
# genkernel gentoo-sources
If you're using genkernel 1.4 or newer, there's no need to specify a kernel:
# genkernel

I did emerge -k genkernel and after that .. I wanted to start genkernel by simple typing genkernel .. then I got the help from genkernel .. even when I type : genkernel gs-sources

So I typed genkernel all and it starts ( still running :? ) but the output I see is a lot different as in the doc shown.. :? :?

The output should be:
Code:
Gentoo Linux genkernel, version 1.4
Copyright 2003 Gentoo Technologies, Inc., Bob Johnson, Daniel Robbins
Distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2

Settings:
compile optimization: 1 processor(s)
source tree: /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-gaming-r3
config: gentoo (customized)
config loc: /etc/kernels/config-2.4.20-gaming-r3
initrd config: (default) /etc/kernels/settings

* Running "make oldconfig"...                                                                     [ ok ]
* Logging to /var/log/genkernel.log...                                                            [ ok ]
* Starting 2.4.20-gaming-r3 build...                                                              [ ok ]
* Running "make dep"...                                                                           [ ok ]
* Running "make bzImage"...                                                                       [ ok ]
* Running "make modules"...                                                                       [ ok ]
* Running "make modules_install"...                                                               [ ok ]
* Moving bzImage to /boot/kernel-2.4.20-gaming-r3...                                              [ ok ]
* Building busybox...                                                                             [ ok ]
* Creating initrd...                                                                              [ ok ]

* Build completed successfully!

And i got:

Code:
GenKernel v3.0.1_beta4-3
* ARCH: x86
* KERNEL VER: 2.4.23_pre8-gss-r2
* kernel: configuring source
* kernel: running mrproper
* kernel: using config from /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.4
* kernel: running oldconfig
* kernel: running clean
* kernel: Making dependencies for Linux 2.4.23_pre8-gss-r2
* kernel: Starting compile of linux 2.4.23_pre8-gss-r2 bzImage
* kernel: Starting compile of linux 2.4.23_pre8-gss-r2 modules

and still busy.....

Is this because the last few weeks is a new genkernel out?
So did I good by starting it with genkernel all? Do I have to worry?

you have the newest genkernel, 3, which is a bit different in it's output than the one documented.

it will also copy your bzImage and initrd to /boot for you, so make sure it's mounted right now!

Well, it's still running ... it seems to me this genkernel version is slower..

It could be me but it seems to take much more time...
