autofs mounts unstable

I have many directories shared on a gentoo server. The clients auto mount those using autofs. Under heavy load (e.g. copying iso images) I get a lot of input/output errors. If I statically mount the shares through fstab, everything is rock solid. Does anybody know of some options/causes for autofs that will help fix this IO problem?
