I installed KDE using the 'desktop manuals'. I also used the pakckages on CD2 of the live-cd set

The problem: When i startup KDE i get the message (in a X-window; i also see the KDE bootlogo) 'StartKDE: could not start KDEinit: check installation'.

When i go back to the console (by clicking Ok): i have this output on the screen:

Startkde: Running kpersonalizer
kpersonalizer: error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0 cannot open shared objects: No sych file or directory
/usr/kde/3.1/bin/kdeinit: error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0 cannot open shared objects: No sych file or directory error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0 cannot open shared objects: No sych file or directory.
startkde: could not start kdeinit: check installation.

What's the problem? And how to solve it.

well, I'd try (re-)emerging the fam package(s). ldconfig, then if it still throwed the errors, I'd updatedb and see if the files it's looking for are even present (locate *libfam.so*). If in a different location or version number than it's looking, I'd simlink to em and cross my fingers.

If it were me, I would re-emerge kde itself by doing it the long way and letting it download everything and compile it (overnight). That always works for me. I just like having the latest things.
