RealNetworks won

This is pathetic. A company that is responsible for RealOne won a Linux Excellence Award.....plus, it's not even MENTIONED as news on http://www.helixcommunity.org/ Note that they are a minor sponsor of the Expo, so methinks a foul sardine has escaped the mighty grasp of the Penguin....
Of course they didn't won the award for their RealOne player, but for the development of the Helix platform.
It's noted on the HC site: https://www.helixcommunity.org/ and also on /.: http://slashdot.org/articles/04/01/21/237235.shtml?tid=141&tid=188

I really would like to read the explanation WHY they have been selected first. IMHO it is one of the worst projects i've worked on. The "projectleaders" are incompetent, the CVS is dead most of the time and most of the code stinks - meaning it's really badly written.

Niek, my justification comes from what rojaro mentioned:

Do you realize WHY the project won? Corporate sponsorship and lobbying. I'm willing to bet that someone from Real was on the adjucation committee. Plus, despite the amount of people who use Gentoo, I think because LinuxWorld is more about corporate involvement with Linux, and thus would go for the "collabrative effort" between the suits and the open source-ers.

Of course, Gentoo is more deserving of kudos, but hey, LinuxWorld doesn't know what they missed out on........

And slon, I support Eva here on the KDE thing. Release numbers are just a marker of progress, not of anything else. The fact KDE goes through them so quickly indicates that the people working on it are being creative enough to come up with new ideas. That's not a bad thing. Plus, it's not like you're having to PAY for each new patch/release unlike a certain company in Washington state requires. And KDE doesn't exactly act like the world will be consumed by flames if everyone doesn't update. There's no gun to your head. If you want to fix something, THEN DO IT. That's the point of open source, Linux, and everything.
