I think a dictionary or spell checker might be a better idea. :)

Probably, but a good typing tutor would be better, that is the real problem.

thats the good thing about gentoo being associated with an 'official' company - we get nominated for cool awards like this :)
It would be sooo cool if gentoo won, but i dont think we will, against KDE3.2 8O . That juggernought has far too much commercial support, and every linux distro has it, whereas only proper geeks have really heard about gentoo...

This is basically a two-horse race between KDE and Gentoo. The other two are not relevant IMO.

Yeah, things must be looking pretty grim in Open Source land if KDE 3.2 got nominated for Product Excellence.

Here is my vote:

Now, you do realize that KDE3.2 is still in beta? I haven't had any real problems with past KDE's and 3.2 Beta2 has been relatively stable for me.

Why are you running kde as root anyway?

I'm not running 3.2, it's 3.1.4 They tell me it's stable. Shoud I believe them?

Is it more stable in non-root?

I haven't had any problems with it, so I would guess the problem is between the chair and the keyboard.

Irrelevant, you shouldn't be running it as root AT ALL! You seem to be running it as root only, and that is a BAD thing to do! I wouldn't be surprised if you had screwed it (meaning KDE) up somehow.

But off course it is my fault. I'm an idiot and Linux is perfect. Never a single bug has been ever filed on Linux.

But really, why are you convinced that KDE doesn't have to be stable under root?

KDE is not Linux. Linux is just one of the many OS'es that KDE can run on top of (others OS'es include FreeBSD, MacOS, Solaris, AIX, NetBSD etc. etc.). I was merely saying that there are THOUSANDS of KDE-users (me included) who don't have problems with the software. Your perspective that it sucks is really limited, considering that overwhelming majority of KDE-users love the desktop.

Just because YOU seem to have problems with it, does not mean that the whole desktop is rotten. Just because some user has problem with Linux, doesn't mean that Linux sucks.

What on EARTH are you blathering about? Where exactly did I make that claim? Only thing I said was that you should NOT run it routinely as root. You shouldn't run basic X as root either. The root-account is to be used only when you need to do some configuration-work (read: rarely). And since it seems that all your crashes happened while running as root, I assume that you routinely run your system as root-user. And that is a BAD IDEA.

Yes, the X server has to be run as root, but xinit and startx should be run as a normal user. The windowmanager should also be run as a regular user.

I think it does. But my point was that you should not run X (as in execute startx and use the GUI) as root. Doing that is always a security-risk IMO. If you need to use some GUI-app as root, you should log in as regural user, and sudo the app. At least KDE offers the ability to run various apps as root.

What an ignorant thing to say. The reason there are public betas are because everyone has different hardware and different combinations of hardware that a few in house testers can't compensate for unless those people actually use and crash their software. Just because it works and it stable for you doesn't mean it must be so for everyone else.

Yeah, and there are MILLIONS of Windows users who don't have a problem with the software either. That doesn't mean its good.

Snap :)
Gentoo is far more stable than kde3.2, if you set it up right...

I would like to reiterate myself:

Gentoo Linux has been announced as a finalist for the Best Open Source project at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo's Product Excellence Awards.

This was supposed to be a PRO-GENTOO thread.
