I dont have mozilla installed, but emerge wants to install it to update gnome when doing emerge -uv world.

Code:

xpto root # emerge -upv world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!

How can I avoid mozilla from being installed?

And, how I can solve the blocks B problem?

Thanks in advance!

Epiphany uses Gecko rendering engine. That's why it's being installed.

You can remove the gtk-theme packages before emerging GNOME to get rid of the blocks.

The standard way of avoiding the installation of unwanted "dependencies" (the word used loosely in this context), is to inject it into the portage db, which fools portage into thinking it has already been installed.
Man emerge for this.

What I did, actually (because emerge -pv gnome lists more I'm not happy with) is just go over the gnome list one by one and emerge those, avoiding ever installing the gnome meta-package.
Or, alternatively, you could make your own gnome meta-packages and just exclude mozilla altogether.

I seriously don't understand why this is a dependency for gnome, though: nothing breaks if I don't use it, and bugger it anyway - I use firebird, nobody is going to tell me what bowser to use!

Which does nothing to explain why it wants to install epiphany.

Yes, yes - I know: Gnome blah epiphany bla ebuild blah blah.

Mozilla Firebird uses the exact same Gecko engine - why can't that count as a dependency ?

They would make a lot more friends in this community if they released mozilla in sensible modules instead of one behemoth 30 MB source package.
That way Gecko could be one package for the user to use as he sees fit.

Epiphany is the standard web browser for the GNOME desktop environment. If you install the whole GNOME desktop, you'll get Epiphany.

It's true that Mozilla is packaged poorly, but it's not Gentoo's fault.

Never claimed that it was. ;-)

As a temporary fix, just remove Epiphany from the dependancies in the ebuild for 2.4.1. It will be back after the next emerge sync, but you should have gnome installed before then. This may not be the correct way, but I use Firebird anyway, so I don't miss Epiphany.

The correct way would be to make a custom gnome ebuild in your overlay; that way it survives emerge sync.
