I've added a pool to count how many gentoo users are interested on it. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

I need to think more about this when I am not so tired/sleepy/feverish, but right now, I don't think this idea of an Indian forum is going to work out. There are many reasons which prompted me to say such a sacrilegious thing.
If a forum for Indians was opened, it will surely be different from other Foriegn Language Forums. Because Indians dont just use single language. Although Hindi is the officially The National Language(tm), not all people are proficient in Hindi. India has 29 individual states. Some of these states do share common main languages, but most of them are large linguistic chunks. Some stats to go with what I was saying (as of 1991):
Code: | Language Number Percentage
Hindi 337,272,114 40.22%
Bengali 69,595,738 8.30%
Telugu 66,017,615 7.87%
Marathi 62,481,681 7.45%
Tamil 53,006,368 6.32%
Urdu 43,406,932 5.18%
Gujarati 40,673,814 4.85%
Kannada 32,753,676 3.91%
Malayalam 30,377,176 3.62%
Oriya 28,061,313 3.35%
Punjabi 23,378,744 2.79%
Assamese 13,079,696 1.56%
Sindhi 2,122,848 0.25%
Nepali 2,076,645 0.25%
Konkani 1,760,607 0.21%
Manipuri 1,270,216 0.15%
Kashmiri 56,693 0.01%
Sanskrit 49,736 0.01%
Other Languages 31,142,376 3.71%
Total: 838,583,988 100.00% |

So, even if a Hindi forum is opened, it won't be largely helpful to everyone. Most people I know personally can speak English more fluently than Hindi. Though most of the Indians, including myself, are no experts when it comes down to English grammar, I am sure potential Gentoo users can somehow manage to communicate with good English speakers. So I don't think a forum for Indians is necessary at the moment. _________________ http://freeshell.in/~vish/ |

Though I believe this idea is quite thoughtful, I have to agree that a Hindi forum makes no real sense. I am from New Delhi, and I know that almost anyone who knows Hindi and is likely to use Gentoo, would know English equally as well.
Also the whole point of multi-lingual forums is to aid those people who have a serious difficulty with English. This is unlikely to occur for Hindi speakers.
The closest to a Hindi forum that could exist is perhaps a general chat forum. |

You sure? To me this isn't something I'm coming across for the first time, most Indians seem to think of Hindi as the National Language (officially)
Let me clarify a few things here.
refer: http://www.answers.com/topic/official-languages-of-india
Quote: | Official languages - Central Government
'Two languages are the languages used by the central administration:'
1. English is the main official language and the language to be used while communicating with the states.
2. Hindi is the official language used by the Central Government when communicating with the states of the Hindi Belt. It is also the official language of Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal.

And then,
Quote: |
Official languages of India
Apart from Hindi and English, a total of 21 other languages are recognized as official languages by the Constitution of India:
1. Assamese official language of Assam
2. Bengali official language of Tripura and West Bengal
3. Bodo official language of Assam
4. Dogri official language of Jammu and Kashmir
5. Gujarati official language of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Gujarat
6. Kannada official language of Karnataka
7. Kashmiri official language of Jammu and Kashmir
8. Konkani official language of Goa
9. Maithili - official language of Bihar
10. Malayalam official language of Kerala, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep
11. Manipuri (also Meitei or Meithei) official language of Manipur
12. Marathi official language of Maharashtra and Goa
13. Nepali official language of Sikkim
14. Oriya official language of Orissa
15. Punjabi official language of Punjab and Chandigarh, second official language of Delhi and Haryana
16. Sanskrit language of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism, required teaching in many schools
17. Santhali - language of the Santhal tribals of the Chota Nagpur Plateau (comprising the states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and Chattisgarh)
18. Sindhi - language of the Sindhi community
19. Tamil official language of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
20. Telugu official language of Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry
21. Urdu official language of Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh
