I looked around on the web and forums on this, but didn't turn anything up and was wondering if anyone knows if this is possible and how to accomplish it. I was wondering if it is possible to have a box request a specific ip from a dhcp router, and if available have itself assigned that ip, and if not take the ip assigned. So basically the network is dhcp, and I would like for my gentoo box to always request lets say 192.168.1.120 if its available.
thanks |

If you need to have the address assigned automatically for a specific reason, look to the post above, otherwise simply assign a static IP address. Its exactly what you want |

thanks for the help but its a no go. I'm looking to try to have my laptop request a certain ip from the router (thats using dhcp -> actual router, not another box). The link is for, from what I take, setting up a dhcp server on an actual box. The static ip thing doesn't work either, since it brings eth0 up, however the router doesn't acknowledge my laptop as being there, by the fact it doesn't show up in the clients table. So basically I'm trying to find a way for my laptop to request a certain ip from the router if its available/not already assigned. |
