I consder buying a used Matrox G550 for my box
I have a TFT with DVI input, so getting DVI work is of great importance.
Moreover, basic 3D accelearation is also of importance, but speed does not really matter.
I also plan to use the card in dual monitor setting (analog/DVI), but this is only of secondary importance.
So, I am hesitating between buying an ATI 9200 (also VGA+DVI) and the G550.
I have read about several problems with both cards.
Most prominently:
G550:
1) Problem getting DVI output at all
2) Switching between different modes locks the XFree for minutes.
9200
1) Instabilities and various problems when using the card.
However, I can get G550 for less money then the ATI card, so if I can get it work I would prefer buying it.
But I would like to ask your exprience before. |

A friend of mine would sell it to me for a fraction of the original price...
OTOH, the best buy for ATI 9200 here is about 75 euro. |

WHy just those two? There are lots and lots of vid-cards with DVI-outputs. WHy not something from NVIDIA for example? _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

These are two cards I can get for a relatively moderate price and I am not ready to pay more than 80 euro for the card.
OTOH it seems to me that ATI have better performance than nvidia for the same price, and the people using nvidia has at least as much problems with it as with ATI.
You can convince me about nvidia, but it seems to me that the only nvidia card which comes to consideration is one with FX5200. Is it well supported under Gentoo Linux? |

It's better supported than any ATI card except the old 7xxx series. _________________ Registered Linux User #263260 |

It uses the same drivers as the rest on NVIDIA-cards do. Yes, the drivers are proprietary, but they are still better than any drivers Ati has under Linux. Hopefully that will change in the future. _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

Not to mention that if you want 3d performance under Linux, you want OpenGL performance, and NVIDIA = OpenGL performance . _________________ <laurentius> gentoo linux?

Hmmm. One of my main reason to change video card is that I have problems with my Radeon 7000.
BTW, according to the net, FX5200 seems to be really faster than an R9200. Perhaps I will end up buying an NVidia.
However, is not here any happy Matrox owner? |

I am a very happy matrox owner..
(g450).. I though about changing it to a that ati of 55Euro.. but this matrox falls under "just works (tm)" hardware..
I got it running all good.. so no need to change (and I hardly use 3d) |
