KDE Menu and Global Entries

There is another thread on this, but I've had no luck. Basically, I need someone to show what steps they took to add a global entry to the KDE menu. I've placed entries in /usr/share/applnk and /usr/kde/3.1/share/applnk and nothing happens. The only success I have is on a per user basis. Has anyone out there found a reasonably simple way to do this?

I got this working by adding stuff to the /usr/share/applnk , the the users had to logout and log back in to KDE to see the apps that I added. Hope this helps.
