I do not have the answer with all details. But,
1) you may need to download first ppp and pppoe packages from another machine
2) put this distfiles in a directory accessible at install time (floppy e.g.)
3) emerge them
4) create /etc/ppp/peers/dsl with all config stuff in this file
5) do all necessary to make the modem alive (load microcode e.g.)
6) pppd call dsl
and 7) if you have a speedtouch USB, i can give all details since i use this connection.

Unfortunately, I don't have speedtouch USB, but I would all details of your installation so that I can use it as a reference and adjust to my gnet dsl modem. Please be specific, I am a newbie with linux. Actually, I want to try all the flavor of linux distro and find out which one suit me the most. Ready now, Redhat 7.3 is installed in my computer.
So, does it means that the installation guide of gentoo assume that you have either a router or a second computer?
Thanx!!! |

I assume that this modem is an external modem connected to your PC via an ethernet card...
This is different from my hardware since I use ppp over ATM and you should use (if I'm right) ppp over ethernet. Then I have just searched around and the solution is described here: http://lists.gentoo.org/pipermail/gentoo-newbies/2002-March/000117.html

yes, my modem is an external modem connected to my PC via an ethernet card.
I have follow the instructions from the link but I get TIMEOUT as the same as the person who wrote the instructions point it out.
Is there a way to contact those people?
thanx! |

Well, I really don't know. I think the best is to make a search on the forum with "pppoe". I have just tried and results seem interesting.
Also, there is an un-official install CD with pppoe support (see in the previous results).
