most games are getting installed into ${GAMES_PREFIX_OPT}, which seems to be set to /opt/ by default. i'd like to change that permanently to /usr/local/games. where do i set this? (i've tried make.conf so far, with no luck).

Try /usr/portage/eclass/games.eclass

yeah. that's a nice tip, but the problem is, that this file will be overwritten after each emerge rsync.
