|
|
Hi,
In a few weeks, I'm going to buy a new laptop but I can't chose which one:
Acer TravelMate 803CLI
= Centrino (Pentium M 1.6 Ghz)
& 64 Mb 3D Card
OR
Acer Aspire 15xx
= AMD Athlon 64
& 64 Mb 3D Card
I know, the Athlon 64 performs much better but it consumes a lot of power and the Pentium M processor can sometimes run up to 6 hours on battery only. Another good thing about the TravelMate is that there is a whole thread dedicated to the 803CLI. Also, a 1.4Ghz Pentium M CPU performs the same as a 2.0Ghz Pentium 4 CPU.
I would like to be able to run Doom 3 on this laptop, but I heard Doom3 requires a 2.5 Ghz AND a 128 Mb 3D card.
Has anyone advice for me? Or does anyone know a laptop which has over 2.5Ghz CPU AND a 128Mb 3D card (or higher)? Or a Centrino laptop with a 128Mb 3D card (that would be awesome because I really like the Centrino technology)? _________________ nitro-sources, because between stable and experimental there exists only speed

Hi there
A friend of mine has an centrino 1.5GHz and 64mb radeon 9600 and it has no problems running the new games.
And you will love the centrino.. long battery life and the fan is never running (I have an 1.4GHz myself)
Hope you could use my "advice" =) |

it all depends on what your needs are.
If you are in the environment without power outlets (bus/train 6 hrs per day), go with the Centrino. Othervise get A64, it also has respectable battery life (~3-4 hrs depending on the battery & manufacturr).
Also, the maximum battery life is performing very light tasks like typing. There is absolutely no way the same laptop would push 6 hrs playing doom3 or playing a DVD.

I recommend the AMD64 (it haves better support for 32 binaries) |

Hmm, I think I'll go for the Centrino. I really like the powersaving and the build-in WLAN card. But isn't there a Centrino laptop with 128Mb 3D card since Doom 3 requires a 128Mb 3D card? _________________ nitro-sources, because between stable and experimental there exists only speed

Well, I watched a presentation given by AMD's Hammer manager on Stanford Universities website, and I've got some really interesting news. He began to explain that there were still a lot of things powered up that they hadn't noticed before when the processor was idle. Apparently they can save many Watts of power, and that low-power state will be available on the next revision of the Athlon64.

Well, I'm 90% sure know that I'll take the Centrino. AMD's Athlon 64 is *VERY* nice, but I think it's better for a desktop PC instead of a laptop.
Also, a Linux support for the AMD 64 is not yet what it should be _________________ nitro-sources, because between stable and experimental there exists only speed
