Hi,

I'm trying to get a 1600x1200 framebuffer in my console. I have compiled the nvidia driver in the kernel (2.6.1) because I have a GeForce 3 videocard. After this I configured my lilo with vga=ask / vga=798 but no succes.

When I use a VESA driver I can use 1280x1024 but I want more :)

Any ideas?

Thanx in advance!

i dont think the nvidia fb driver supports the newer nvidia cards, looks like you're stuck with vesa :)

No; it's only for XFree86. I'd avoid the rivafb driver anyway, unless you're trying to setup a framebuffer-only (i.e., no X) system, because the nvidia X driver quarrels with it rather profoundly :).

Working!

I've added the following line to the lino.conf:

append="video=rivafb:1600x1200-8@85"

When I use the: append="video=rivafb:1600x1200-16@85" the colors are messed up.
But hey, 8 bit is more than enough to follow emerge -k kde

Is there already a solution for the with rivafb and the nvidia x drivers?

I don't think you quite understand. The nvidia riva driver for the framebuffer is very outdated, and very useless. It provides nothing but a performance DECREASE from the vesa framebuffer, and does not support large amounts of colors.

There is NO way to get them to work nicely with the xfree nvidia drivers, which actually function correctly most of the time, unless it has been created in the past day or so and nobody has heard of it.

If you insist on using the riva driver for your framebuffer, it will restrict you to using either the framebuffer OR x. Not both. The reason for this is that switching between them causes severe graphics corruption and makes the system mostly unusable. If this is ok with you, then by all means continue.

However, I and most other people would recommend the vesa driver because it isn't ridiculously broken.

1600x1200 (60Hz for me, trying FB patch now) in GRUB: kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage2.6.1 root=/dev/hda3 vga=838 video=vesa:1600x1200@85

Replace paths as necessary..

You're talking about a FB patch...

Is this neccesary for the 2.6.1 kernel?

I've Yes where can I find this?

Is this also working with Lilo?

This patch: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=71570&highlight=1600x1200+838

It didn't do anything for me. Still 60Hz. It's painful if the background isn't black (since a black background doesn't need to be lit up, you don't really see any flicker 'cause there's no/little light to begin with). I'm glad XFree runs at a decent res, but unfortunately that's completely different.

Well i've been able to use my vesa fb at 1600x1200@75. To do so just go that thread danDragonrage posted and look for the post ikaro made on the last page of it (a little below middle).
You should be able to get it working, that's how i got mine working. Beware however of this...I don't know if it was something i did or not but when i rebooted the fb was indeed at 1600x1200@75 but the display window had a 1280x1024 geometry.
So i would recommend using bootsplash to remove this annoyance.

Thanks! It's working perfectly! :D
I never have patched any kernel before bud everything worked flawless... even the Grub installation/configuration.

I'm now going to try to get it running on 1600x1200@100 (still using @60 now but that's no problem for the console)

Great support here! thanks!
