This is actually something that has never worked for me in gentoo. No matter what keyword I use, man -k returns "nothing appropriate". How can I fix it? |

man -k, apropos, and whatis all use the whatis database. This can be created by the command:
Code: | #/usr/sbin/makewhatis |
There should probably be a cron entry to keep it up to date as man pages are added or changed. _________________ "There is no teacher but the enemy." |

Hate to reply to my own post, but makewhatis is in /etc/cron.daily,
but the command is commented out. Edit the file, and remove the # sign. _________________ "There is no teacher but the enemy." |

AWESOME! This is one of those things that has annoyed me for a long time on Gentoo, but just enough so I didn't actually search for it. It took a long time to find it today too, but now that I know, I just emailed my friend the solution, because we've been puzzled by it for almost 2 years. It was a pain to ssh into the slackware box and run apropos!
