What hardware and software powers this site? I'm just curious at how much is required to get something like this going.

This machine is only 533MHz PIII (Coppermine) with 384MB of RAM, 70GB of disk space, and my load averages never average more then .5 over 1 minute. I guess the only limitation is my connection.

The software is Apache, PHP, MySQL.

The subject line says it all. Is there a possiblility that this site will be moved to where www.gentoo.org is hosted? That site withstood slashdotting multiple times.

Brian

I talked to kabau who runs/maintains the Gentoo webserver, he's in the process of moving it to a new location for more bandwidth. We talked about moving it to that server soon as he gets it relocated. I'm running MRTG and all my graphs never come close to hitting my bandwidth cap. As long as I stay below half my cap I think the site should remain rather speedy for users.

The server utilizes less then half of its cap at peak times.

Damn, if you can host a whole forum board on a 380kb upload cab then I wonder what a 1000kb upload cap can do...

It would use a whole lot less if you were using mod_gzip... 50% bandwidth savings easy. Plus, it would make the site more responsive, because there's less transfer time.

delta407 - i agree BUT, nitro says p3 CuMine 533, gzipping everything would add a lot of cpu time to every transaction. a p3 CuMine 533 is a little on the low side to be running the gentoo forums WITH gzip on, but just right with it off.

anyway, Nitro says we dont even come close to the bandwidth cap so all is good.

just my thoughts though..

i suppose the community could DONATE some cash or hardware to Nitro for a new forums machine, like a dually athlon XP MP 2000+ with 2GB of ram and a nice RAID5 IDE array for about 200GB of storage.:), then im sure we could all enjoy lightning fast forum speeds and delta407 could get his gzip compression :)

heck, with 4989 registered users :) figure just $1 per member. i would give a dollar for that.

There's a post around here somewhere that lists the server specs, but I can't find it, so I'll list them again here, just for giggles:

  • Athlon XP 1800+
  • 512MB RAM
  • 40GB IDE Drive
  • Gentoo Linux
  • gentoo-sources kernel

And he doesn't even mention RAM usage or load averages.

Tsk, tsk... :D

You can always get load averages here which updates every 5 minutes. As for RAM usage, it tends to be anywhere from ~160MB - 256MB, depending on the load. Add another 100MB for the RAM disk that we use for the rsync service.

:P

BTW, sine I just realized how old this thread is, and that Nitro quotes a 533Mhz Celeron as being used for the server earlier in this thread, just thought I'd state the obvious: This server has been upgraded since then. :)

Whoa! Slow down there cowboy! Slap my knee and call me Curly, they *did* upgrade the forums machine. j/k :D

Although, I was thinking about what we could do to make the forums machine even faster, but then I realized that there's really no need to do that right now. I haven't really had any problems with the quality of service. Perhaps it's just a really well-maintained machine...

Hi,

I would like to know what kind of hardware/software you guys are using for
forums.gentoo.org. How is the machine performing? Are you using all the
resources?
From the user point of view it runs pretty good.

Thanks,
