Well, when I installed gentoo the ethernet card (8139too, integrated) didn't work, althought the LiveCD detected it correctly.
I had to append
Code:
"pci=noacpi"
at the boot in grub, and then it worked.

I have searched in google and into the forum, but I haven't found too much information about ACPI and APIC.

Could you experienced people :wink: explain me what is the difference between APCI and APM, if it is necessary for a desktop PC (not a laptop) and what I lose if I append
Code:
pci=noapci; apci=off; apci=ht; noapic; etc ...
at the boot time?

I think this is a theme a lot of people (as me) have not too much clear, and some explanation would be of big interest. Thanx.

P.D. - My system is a AthlonXP 2000 on a QDI GA-7VAX MoBo with KT400 chipset, 512Mb DDR333, Geforce2 GTS, etc...

acpi is newer than apm
if you don't mind your energy liferants bills than you probably don't need either when using a desktop.

Well, I'm not very experienced with APM and ACPI, but I could give you a hint more.

APM does only powermanagement (thus it's name: Advanced Power Management)

ACPI is more than just that, it does computer configuration stuff as wel (as again it's name says: Advanced Configuration and Power Interface).

It should be possible on more modern hardware to use ACPI to read fan speeds, temperature information, cpu information, etc...

ACPI is still quite new in Linux. However, some newer hardware no longer support APM but only ACPI. (AFAIK)

Here are some useful links:

ACPI - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
ACPI4Linux
ACPI HOWTO
Power Management with Linux - APM, ACPI, PMU

Haven't read all of these myself yet though.

Cheers

Just came across this one:

AnandTech: ACPI vs APM

Happy reading :wink:
