Ok, i'm running Kernel: 2.6.1-mm4 and did a complete stage1 install from the basic cd. I did not compile in /dev/pts into the kernel, as per the gentoo instruction set. When i try to ssh into the box from another computer, putty comes up with the following error:
Quote:
Server refused to allocate pty

I did a search, and there have been a couple of posts about this, both with different solutions that I didn't understand the reason behind.

The first mentioned booting the livecd, mounting the root partition and deleting /dev/.devfsd

The second said do the same, but delete /dev/ptmx (which causes some problem with the adsl-start script).

I am not confident in doing either without understanding what they do/will happen, especially if i can just recompile my kernel with a certain option checked.

Any explanations will be greatly appreciated,

thanks

you need to recompile the kernel w/ pts support, and make sure that you mount /dev/pts at boot. That will fix your problem
