Hi All
Just finished installing Gentoo on my Fujitsu Siemens P4 2.55 GHZ ( not mobile cpu ) Laptop.
I installed the 1.4 with the mm kernle 2.6.1.
The kernel was configured with acpi support.
The BIOS does not give me controll over the power saving / heat controll
when im doing heavy duties like compiling ( tried to install mozilla ) the laptop suddenly shut down.
some stat the i find useful:
cat /proc/acpi/thermalzone/THRC/cooling_mode
<not supported>
cat /proc/acpi/thermalzone/THRC/polling_frequeny
<polling disabled>
cat /proc/acpi/thermalzone/THRC/state
ok
cat /proc/acpi/thermalzone/THRC/temprature
53 C <-- this is when doing nothing
cat /proc/acpi/thermalzone/THRC/trip_points
critical (S5): 79C
Under cat /proc/acpi/fan i have nothing, is this ok ?
When I try to do something heavy the /proc/acpi/thermalzone/THRC/temprature get very high real soon and the laptop shutdown.
I also noticed that the fan does not increase its speed at all.
I also browesed the forum and found that this problem accour alot but I couldnt find a good solution to it.
Any ideas ? |

I got almost the same thing : I boot the laptop, and within 5 minutes it shutdown with no particular messages ... then I reboot and then the laptop do not shutdown until I ask for it ...
I run 2.4.22 ...
Do you have flashed your BIOS ? |

I dont think there is a an update to my laptop.
can you look in you logs for message that state that your CPU reached critical heat and the system is going for halt ?
thugh the real question is if there a bug in the 2.6.1 regarding acpi ? the live cd instellation worked just fine and the fans did the work very well. |

What is your model ? Mine is an Amilo D7830 and there's an update for the BIOS.

Looking at my logs ( syslog, messages, debug and kernel.log) there's nothing like this .. but the ACPI was not totaly configured, and it perhaps make the difference ...

I did not yet try a 2.6 beast on it, but will try as soon as I finished installing it |

To make the problem go away on my Compaq laptop I just don't load the "thermal" module.
Machine hasn't burned out yet ...
No luck with suspend-to-disk with 2.6.x; I'm currently running 2.4.18. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

strange, as the live cd worked ( 2.4 ). maybe its indeed a bios problem. ill try to upgrade it later |

OK.. Tonight I tried again: no reboot, but I can see 2 differences with my previous experiences:
- I didn't compile anything: thus the temperature doesn't go higher than 75 celsius (which seems me quite high no ?) (note that the ACPI config stuff said that the upper limit is 85 celsius ..). If temperatuer is the problem, I can perhaps increment the upper limit ..
- I worked continuously: thus the screen didn't have to go off

I upgraded the laptop Bios and the fan started to work just fine.
This is strange as in the XP evrything worked before the upgrade.
thugh still nothing apear under the /proc/acpi/fan directory
by the way, i compile all the acpi futured in the 2.6.1-mm4 |

ACPI support isn't very good under linux, so flashing the BIOS will probably not change anything... If you're lucky you might get sw-suspend to work but I wouldn't count on it...
I've been running 2.5/6 for a while now on an Amilo D 7800 and it has happened that the fans wouldn't come on, resulting in the pc shutting down when the cpu got too hot, but it happens extremely rarely |

OK .. I've found some more things:
- When I first boot: the temperature given by the sensors is 0 degre for the CPU and doesn't change. But when the machine shutdown and I reboot the temperature is correct: aboute 50 degre (note that ACPI temperature still return 75)
- I've found that the DSDT is seriously bugged, and I'm in the process of overriding the system one by a fixed one ...
