Ok, this is a tid bit weird. My problems are always...unique. I have my gentoo webserver up and running, for the most part things are ok, a few reboots have been necessary ( power outages, hardware upgrades, etc) this morning my co-admin rebooted it because it was "running slow"....he's used to windows, I can't really fault him, but here's the problem.
Every time I reboot, it fails to bring up eth0. If I put in a completely new ethernet card, it works. But, the old Ethernet cards never work again, after the system has been rebooted with them in it. It's like it blocks them by mac address or SOMETHING. I've searched the forums and don't see this anywhere, I've never heard of it happening before, and I am completely at a loss as to why it might be going on. Hopefully someone can shed some light on things for me. Thanks for the help!
oh yeah, and I'm out of 'new' ethernet cards ![Sad :(](images/smiles/icon_sad.gif) |

What NICs are you using and which drivers? Did you compile support into the kernel, or as a loadable module? Do you have another machine you can test the cards in? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I'm using almost exclusively 3com 3c905c ( or b, which is almost the same, but without WOL) and the 3c590/3c900 series drivers that are compiled as modules. I tested the first two cards I had to take out in other machines and they worked, I haven't tested the most recent one.
The modules are set to autoload. Let me grab the bootup error message...
"eth0: unknown interface: No such device"
"* Failed to bring eth0 up"
wee.
should I recompile support into the kernel?

I love learning things. Thank you very much, I appreciate your help. Compiling support did the trick. Yum. Also, thanks for the tip on my other post, I didnt' even see it at the bottom. My powers of observation are weakened by a lack of caffeine at the moment.
Anyway, I guess it just needed to be compiled in and not a module, thanks again!
