Is there a Gentoo sound configuration guide? The only one I can find is for ALSA. What if I want to be normal and use modules for my onboard AC97 chip? The kernel detects it fine and hotplug loads the modules correctly (soundcore, ac97_codec, and via82cxxx_audio). Under gnome, my audio icon on the upper-right is permantly crossed out and I'm unable to play mp3s with mpg321. Is there some basic configuration that I need to undergo to get sound working? Thanks |

Hi there !!!
Check /dev/sound/dsp and /dev/sound/mixer permissions (they usually belongs to audio group). Also, check if the user you use to start GNOME is in the audio group.
Cheers,

Alsa is the normal sound nowadays. Give the alsa guide a shot. |

in the case where /dev/sound is empty is there a way to rebuild it, like MAKEDEV.snd has done for /dev/snd* et /dev/mixer ?
thanks |

just a reply to precise how i solved my problem (no sound under gnome - but xmms working)
-> gnome is using /dev/sound/*
-> /dev/sound/* is dependant from alsa-oss emulation (module : snd-pcm-oss)
-> re-emerge alsa-driver with oss in $USE...
Ooo.. the sound is back under gnome & gstreamer... |
