Hi all,
I want to move my gentoo installation to a newer box that has become available. If the processor is the same make will it simply be a case of plugging in the drives booting up and maybe just having to do some minor changes to the kernel and drivers like sound card/network etc. Will I be able to at least get to a command prompt to do this stuff or is it more likely that the machine will just hang?
What are the other suggested way of migrating to a new machine? Will a complete reinstall followed by a coping of relavant files be the best way to go?
thanks |

It'll work especially if the processor and eide chipsets are identical. Yuo'll probably get some error messages on bootup. If your system had some extrem cflags and the hardware doesn't support all the optimizations that'd give you problems. Worst case scenario is you have to use the the live cd once the drive is transferred, chroot into your system and edit the make.conf and then emerge -D world. |

if the basic support is there, and the processor is the same type, you should be able to get to at least the command prompt with a few errors, then you can recompile all the needed stuff _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)
