PostPosted: Fri Aug 23, 2002 5:19 pm    Post subject: kazaa on linux? Reply with quote

Hi,

I just blew my Win XP partition to byte heaven, without the slightest remorse.

Well, almost.

Since I'm an avid p2p mp3 file sharer, I tested just about every p2p program that was out there, and yes, I felt the end of Audiogalaxy like getting hit, in the stomach :(

After fiddling around with all these nifty file sharing programs, I sticked to Kazaa. Not because it's the best, no. It's awfully loaded with adware, spyware, the whole load. But because it's used by literally *millions* of people eager to share their mp3's. This was about the only chance to find some rare Charles Mingus, or Chick Corea playing Bartok live and unreleased. (I like Nine Inch Nails too, don't worry...)

Well well. I know there is a Windows emulator called Wine. I never tried it out (because until yesterday I never had to).

What do you think? Is there a chance that the Windows version of Kazaa would run on Wine (or some other emulator?)

Suggestions *very* appreciated.

Thanks,

Niki

Moving from Networking & Security to Desktop Environments.

Though this is a P2P app, the subject fits more with Desktop Environments than networking. There are no networking or security issues addressed.

I like to download movies so I use MLDonkey combined with "www.sharereactor.com". Ive downloaded a few MP3's and OGG's but I don't think my stuff was anywhere as rare as yours. Definately give it a try though. Maybe I'll read up on making ebuilds and create one for MLDonkey.

Kazaa Lite works pretty well under WINE. Read this article if you can't get it working. It does take up a sizeable chunk of CPU time though, around 15-25% on my system.

Is there any way to install Kazaa Lite without any original Win95/98/Me dlls?

<sigh of relief>

Well, thanks for all these hints. I'll give the wine + kazaa lite combination a try as soon as my openoffice build is finished... maybe a year or two? <mooooooohahahahaha emoticon missing>

BTW, what about rethinking some terminology? Like on-the-snail compile? <grin>

But seriously. The Gentoo community makes up an important part of this distributions' charm, really. Using Gentoo since two days now (not counting two rather humiliating install attempts), I'll *definitely* stick to it. System works fine ( = euphemism), doc is excellent, people in the forums are nice and helpful.

Peace & love,

Niki

gift is an OpenFasttrack client similar to the one kazaa uses. You may want to try that. There is also an mldonkey ebuild thats been masked.

giFT is really nice!
I use it with giFTcurs, because kift failes to compile
But next week I'll reinstall my system (hopefully with Gentoo 1.4 final) and perhaps it'll work then...

So give it a try. Also it has only about 600 users online you can find _very_ much!

Have fun!

if just emerged kiFT and it worked fine... the only problem is that you have to use a CVS version of giFT, otherwise it wont work.
Also, 600 user very much??? have you ever used a kazaa network??? theres like millions of users connected...
im installing CVS to try kiFT, im also trying to run kazaa lite with wine, and also trying to configure vmware... all this to run a kazaa program in linux and dont have to use windows !

cheers

I don't say that 600 users are much. 600 is very less. But I found everything I searched for, until now. So i wanted to say:
These 600 users share very much, against what you have thousands (or millions) of "freeloaders" which don't share any files.

ok?

ive been trying some programs like dctc, and giFT...
yeah, youre right, sorry i misunderstood you...
in dctc for example, you have to share a minimum of 2gb or sometimes 15gb, 50gb to connect... thats a lot different from the kazaa network, which doesnt require a minimum of gb to share.
sorry

thanx/cheers

I've found Lopster to be a decent program... it connects to the WinMX network and seems pretty good.

I've used Limewire on Linux before, haven't tried it with Gentoo though, maybe I'll give it a try.
