|

During the kernel compilation step of the install, the computer froze during the compile. I wasn't able to switch to another virtual terminal, nor did the computer power-down when I held the power button for 6 seconds.
The only resolution was to physically cut power to the computer and restart.
The second time I tried to compile (without any changes to the settings) the computer completed the task successfully.
However, on various other compiles, the same thing has happened. I'm at a loss as to what I should be looking for to solve this problem. What would be causing this? I get no kernel messages at the point of failure. It's just frozen on what it was doing. |

Frequently, odd hangs are RAM related. How long have you owned this machine? Have you been inside the case lately? Can you run RAM tests? _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"

This can also be the result of overheating. I've seen computers do the weirdest things when the CPUs starting gettin toasty. _________________ --brain |

I've had the machine forever. I recently installed another 256MB of RAM, I used some freeware DOS program to test it, which took like, 26 hours....
...could there still be something wrong with it? How should I test it? |

ahhh, yes. Thank you for the tip about bad RAM. At first I thought it was the mm-sources I was using, but then your RAM talk made me recall that I boosted up my RAM from 133 MHz to 166 MHz, which is not what it's supposed to run at.
Now compilation works again without freezing the computer. =) |
