DMA for a tape drive...

I've got an OnStream DI-30, and when I do a tape backup, it brings my whole system to it's knees, even slowing down the clock. I'm 99% certain this is because it doesn't have DMA enabled. Does anyone know how to enable DMA on a tape drive?
