I have a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio soundcard. At least that's what windows says it is. What sound module should I use when I try to get my sound working?

Ask Google.

Looks like it's an i815...

When I tried to get a list of all the sound cards, I found that I didn't have /misc under /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r5 like the desktop guide shows. When I edit the modules.autoload file do I just put snd-i815?

You have to compile your sound card driver in your kernel configuration, or use ALSA (though I don't know if ALSA supports your card).

Code:
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make menuconfig

Go into Sound, and build "Intel ICH (i8xx) audio support" either as a module (<M>) or compiled into the kernel (<*>). If you build it as a module, you have to put it in modules.autoload.

So if I have it built-in then I just reboot the computer and sound will work?

I would not recommend compiling the driver directly into the kernel for sound (for a newbie like myself.) I was not able to get ANYWHERE when I had done it that way. I am getting much further with the support as a module and then simply adding the entry to the /etc/modules.autoload for you it would be the i810_audio (which covers all intel i8xx chipsets reportedly).

Good luck!!!!
