hello,

i've been thinking of a dualboot system(gentoo and w2kpro(wanna play somehing to :D)) on a 120Gb disc. now, i will have the w2k on a 10gb partion and gentoo on a 10-20Gb, some 10-15Gb for games and the rest for files for both os:es to share on now, what shall i use for type on these extra gb:s so both can use em equally?

linux can access them all, windows not (without special drivers). so you could use fat32 and ntfs. I'd take fat32, because ntfs writing support is a quite recent addition in kernel 2.6.

Depending on the block size, a fat32 partition can be as big as 2TB.

I was curious where you heard of that 30 GB limitation and found this (microsoft.com): "In Windows XP, you can format a FAT32 volume up to 32 GB only." I don't know though whether one can _use_ a bigger one in windows xp. but nothing stops you from creating more than one fat32 partition

Yes, Windows XP can use larger FAT32 partitions without any trouble. To get around this rather dumb limit, boot with a Windows 98 CD and format the partition from there.

s:recent:useless for people not hacking kernel vfs drivers:

Yes, the new NTFS driver supports writing, but:
1. You may only write to files that already exist (no new files, that is)
2. After writing the file, it must have the same size as before - making it useless for anything more than playing with it and/or debugging.

Think about it... on the other hand, read support is decent.

Alexander
