I'm a SuSE 9.0 user. I recently moved to an AMD64 computer and was very excited to try SuSE 9.0 for x86_64 on it. Well, it crashed all the time. So did the 32-bit SuSE 9.0. It turned out to be the 2.4.21 kernel didn't support my nFORCE 3 motherboard chipset.

SO... I had to move to the 2.6 kernel. But how?

Well, I freed up a partition on my drive and went through the Gentoo install. It was very, very educational. I now have a working stage 3, and I emerge new packages on it now and then. Keeps my computer busy at night...

Wht the knowledge gained from that, I managed to compile and install the 2.6 kernel on SuSE. And suddenly, no more crashes!

I want to say thank you, the Gentoo Handboox is one of the clearest, simplest explanations around of how to set up and administer a Linux system. I don't know how much I'll use Gentoo in the future, but it has been a great way to learn more about Linux.

honestly, you will learn more in the next three months than you ever did with any other version of linux.

You only know what 'bleeding edge' is when you're running the latest love-sources, 2.6 linux headers, gcc-3.4, glibc-2.3.3_beta, xfree-4.3.99.902 and agressive CFLAGS 8)

Hey, at least he's a happy Linux user...

I have to concur with citibob. When I decided that Mandrake wasn't cutting the mustard, I researched all of the mainstream distros: Slackware, SuSE, LFS, and so on. Gentoo's incredible documentation was one of the things that made me decide to switch. I've learned more in a few months with Gentoo than over a year with Mandrake. More importantly, it's made learning and using my OS fun again.
