not all of my memory is recognized?

I have 2 x 512 MB DIMMs in my machine. The BIOS recognizes them fine,
and running memtest from the gentoo LiveCD shows no problems with them,
but when I am in Linux, I only see ~904MB when I run "top" or "free". What happened to my other ~128MB of RAM? This is a brand new install using kernel 2.6.

You need to activate high mem support in your kernel.

make menuconfig -> Processor type & features -> High Memory Support
