|

After rebooting from the install, I'm now in Gentoo Linux, drives mounted and the works. The problem is that I set my USE statement to compile KDE and Gnome but when I got to the very end of the install, supid me couldn't remember the current version of KDE 3.1.? so I left it at Gnome for now. But Gnome is not started. Extreme noob here!
So I'm in text mode with no GUI. No commands are recognized like kde or gnome or anything. I did notice that modprobe encountered errors. I feel like I'm pretty close. But how can I get into Gnome or KDE especially?
Stage2-nogenkernel-2.4.22-Athlon XP using reiserfs on boot and root.
Need any more info don't hesitate to ask. I'm excited that I've made it this far.

did you run 'emerge gnome' or 'emerge kde'? if so, you need to set the login screen you use (xdm/kdm/gdm) in /etc/rc.conf and then run '/etc/init.d/xdm start'. 'rc-update add xdm default' to have it start on bootup _________________ 95% of all computer errors occur between chair and keyboard (TM)

emerge gnome or emerge kde should do the trick. The USE flags just tell portage to build applications with KDE or gnome support if its available. _________________ We don't need no stinkin' signatures. |

I don't think kde or gnome is installed by default on the install unless you specifically do a emerge gnome or emerge kde.
To see if gnome is installed, do a emerge -s gnome and you should see the version and underneath it should say [not installed] or the version number. If it isn't install, then just do a emerge gnome and it will install it for you. Be prepared because it won't be quick. After it is installed, you will have to edit the rc.conf file and change the XSESSION line to equal gnome-2.4 or something like that. To start the gui, just type startx on the command line. |

I gave 'emerge kde' a try. I noticed during the install that I couldn't download one certain file. Now I know why I'm having a problem.
XFree86-4.3.0-patches-1.1.7.tar.bz2 can not be found on any mirror emerge tries!
My network is working fine. I can ping web/ftp addresses so I know I'm good there. I also have a 2Mbit cable connection so badwidth is not a problem either.
What are my options?
TIA!

try to run an emerge sync and then try emerge kde and see if that fixes the problem. |
