Hi all,

for 2 day now, I have searched the forums for hints to solving my problem. I wanted to try the gentoo-dev-sources. I have compiled the 2.6.1 kernel just before on my notebook with great success, 2.6 rocks!
But with my AMD Athlon 1400 desktop I had no success. I did not manage to start correctly, not even one time. This computer has an Asus A7V motherboard with 4 IDE ports. Thus, my IDE hard disk is hde (not "a", the "e" is correct).I always get a
Code:

Kernel panic: VFS: Could not mount root fs "hde3" or unknown-block(hd0,0)

I do not know the exact phrase, I am writing this with this computer and kernel 2.4.22.

The disk works (with 2.4.22). It can be mounted with liveCDs. I have compiled the chipset, the filesystems and the pseude filesystems into the kernel (not as modules). I tried to change from
Code:
root=/dev/hde3
to
Code:
root=0303
, no effect. I also tried option like
Code:
acpi=off
without effect. And the MSDOS-Partition thing under File Systems also had no effect.

Does anyone know something else? Thanks, R!tman

Have you tried running fsck on the disk?

I suspect the problem is that the second IDE controller is slightly hard to detect, and if you're expecting to use hde, it would be that one.

This site seems to explain how to get it working, provided you've got some ability to boot to a linux shell:

First, though, make sure the PROMISE ide driver is compiled into the kernel (in 2.6 it's under device drivers/ATA ATAPI...). I'd probably, if it wasn't compiled in, try doing just that, and if it fails go onto the website.[/url]
